October 1 – Brazil legend Pelé has been released from hospital after undergoing surgery for a colon tumour. He will require further treatment at home.
On September 4, the 80-year-old had the tumour removed at leading Brazilian hospital Albert Einstein in Sao Paulo, and on Thursday, after weeks of recovery and treatment, his doctors discharged him. Pelé also spent a few days in intensive care after his surgery.
“I am so happy to be back at home,” wrote Pelé in a statement on Facebook. “I want to thank the entire Albert Einstein Hospital team, who made my stay a pleasant one, with a humane and very affectionate welcome. Thanks also to all of you, who from afar, make my life complete with so many messages of love.”
Pelé’s medical team said he will continue undergoing chemotherapy at home. The tumor was detected in routine tests. In recent years, his health has deteriorated with prostate problems in 2015 and a urinary infection in 2019.
Pelé is widely considered the greatest player of all time, having won the World Cup three times with Brazil. He is the Selecao’s all-time leading goal scorer with 77 goals in 92 games. With Santos, he won the Copa Libertadores twice.
