December 6 – With a convincing majority, Rodolfo Landim has been reelected as president of Brazilian giants Flamengo for a three-year term.
Landim (pictured) saw off Marco Aurelio Asseff, Walter Monteiro and a number of fringe candidates to retain his position with 64.5% of the 2,000 votes cast.
“It is a resounding victory, showing that we are on the right path,” said Landim. “Recognition of the effort of the entire team, of the work we’ve been doing. I think it will be another three years of struggle ahead of us. It is the recognition of the effort of the entire team on the purple plate. It has been successful. I think the most important thing is that our team is called ‘Unifla’. We have always proposed union of all the red and black fans.”
Landim kept a low profile during the presidential elections, not giving a single media interview. Flamengo have endured turbulent weeks after they were defeated in the season-defining Copa Libertadores final by Brazilian rivals Palmeiras. Two days later, the club and coach Renato Gaucho parted ways.
Landim confirmed that vice-president Marcos Braz will continue at the club. “The guy is vice-president who is three-time champion of Rio de Janeiro, twice Brazilian champion, champion of the Libertadores, of Recopa, twice of the Supercup,” said Landim.
“He is a great winner, a guy who is working all the time, he is my right-hand man in football. Is he crazy?”
Landim was vice-president of planning during club president Eduardo Bandeira de Melo’s first term, before he defeated Bandeira de Melo in the 2018 elections. His predecessor’s austerity measures paved the way for Flamengo’s success under Landim. In 2019, Flamengo and their Portuguese coach swept past domestic and continental opposition to win both the domestic and continental crowns.
