December 9 – Technical director Marc Overmars has extended his contract at Ajax Amsterdam until 2026. He has held the role since 2012.
Overmars’ current contract ran until 2024, but the Dutchman will stay with the club for another two seasons. “I still enjoy my job very much and get a lot of satisfaction from my work,” said Overmars.
“The cooperation with my fellow board members is very good, as is with the people at the Future with whom I work in the field of scouting, youth, transfers etc.”
During his time at the club, Ajax have won the Dutch league crown four times and almost reached the final of the Champions League in the 2018-2019 season only to fall at the hands of Tottenham’s Lucas Moura and his dramatic last-minute strike in the semi-finals. In 2017, Ajax lost the final of the Europe League 2-0 to Manchester United.
Ajax’s chairman of the board Leen Meijaard said: “The Supervisory Board is very happy with Marc Overmars as director of football affairs. The performance of the A-selection composed under his responsibility is of course the most striking.”
In the past, Overmars has been linked with senior roles at Barcelona and Arsenal. Newcastle have reportedly also expressed interest in Overmars, following the takeover by Saudi Arabia’s PIF.
”The team plays under the leadership of Erik ten, appointed by Marc,” said Meijaard. “Hag is attractive and successful, both nationally and internationally.”
“But we also see good development in other football-technical matters. With Marc in the management team, we think that the upward trend that our ambitious club started a few years ago can be continued.”
Meanwhile, Ajax CEO Edwin Van der Sar, who has been tipped to succeed Manchester United’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward, hinting that he would not mind a reunion with his former club.
