AFC launches ‘Emotions in Football Project’ for coaches and educators

December 17 – The AFC has launched an educational and well-being initiative designed to help coaches and players manage their emotions and ultimately improve their performances on the pitch.

Tagged as the ‘Emotions in Football Project’, it was presented to member associations in an online session yesterday, targeting both grassroots and elite football.

The project is a continuation of the work of the AFC Emotions in Football Working Group, of which former Liverpool, Lyon and France coach Gérard Houllier was an original member before he died last year.

Member association technical directors and coach educators will now be involved in the next phase of its roll out. Japan and Qatar are the first pilot MAs to implement the project that will include activities focused on handling and understanding the emotions of coaches and players.

A section on players emotions and managing their emotional health also be added to the AFC’s Coach Education Courses.

AFC General Secretary, Dato’ Windsor John, said: “Technical knowledge is important but in this modern era, coaches and footballers need to better understand their emotions and explore constructive ways to establish a more conducive and holistic environment as part of efforts to strengthen the larger football development structure.

“As outlined in our Vision to ensure our teams succeed at the highest level, the AFC’s Emotions in Football Project is our latest technical initiative that addresses the various aspects of emotional intelligence and offers practical advice for coaches and players from the grassroots level to elite football.”
