Nike terminate Greenwood deal

February 8 – Nike have terminated their endorsement of Manchester United and England striker Mason Greenwood, the sportswear firm has announced, citing “deep concerns” following his arrest on suspicion of rape and assault.

Last week, Greenwood was released on bail pending further investigation having been further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and making threats to kill while in police custody.

At that point Nike said it was “deeply concerned by the disturbing allegations and will continue to closely monitor the situation”. In a new statement, the sportswear giant said that  “Mason Greenwood is no longer a Nike athlete.”

The 20-year-old was arrested after images showing physical abuse and videos were posted online.

Greater Manchester Police did not name the footballer last week but said: “A 20-year-old man arrested on Sunday, January 30, 2022, on suspicion of the rape and assault of a woman has been released on bail pending further investigation.”

Man Utd have reiterated that Greenwood will not play or train with the club “until further notice” despite his release on bail.

Greenwood debuted for United in 2019. He has scored 35 goals in 129 appearances for Manchester United, while he has been capped once by the England national team.
