February 18 – After just a year in the job, the head of Iranian football, Shahaboddin Azizi Khadem (pictured), has been removed, seemingly because of differences with the federation’s executive.
Members of the federation’s board of directors held an extraordinary meeting on Thursday in which Azizi Khadem was ousted.
Mirsahd Majedi was appointed as interim president of the federation until an extraordinary assembly is held in mid-May. The board of directors at first announced Mehrdad Seraji as caretaker boss but reversed its decision and picked Majedi.
Khadem has faced controversy since taking charge not least, according to local reports, over ambiguities in contracts related to the football federation that had damaged relationships.
Earlier this year, Khadem announced FIFA chief Gianni Infantino would attend a crucial World Cup qualifier against arch-rivals Iraq, but Infantino was not in Tehran.
