February 21 – Manchester City say they are “shocked and appalled” by an attack on their young England forward Phil Foden and his family backstage at a high-profile boxing match on Saturday.
A video appeared to show them involved in a scuffle at the all-British contest between Amir Khan and Kell Brook at Manchester’s AO Arena.
The footage, widely circulating on social media, shows Foden reacting to a fight that broke out in one of the corridors of the Arena.
The incident involved members of Foden’s family who City say had been “harassed and abused”. One video shows Foden’s mother, who confronted a group of men who had been abusing the player, being punched in the face.
“We are shocked and appalled about the nature of the abuse and ensuing assault on one of Phil’s family members. We will continue to give Phil and his family all the support and assistance they need,” City said.
Foden attended the fight as a fan shortly after City’s Premier League fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.
Police have launched an investigation into the incident.
