Barca vs Real Madrid sets new record attendance for women’s game

March 31 – The record for the highest attendance ever at a women’s football match was set last night in the Camp Nou in the second leg of the Champions League final between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Barca won 3-2 to move to the semi-finals 5-2 on aggregate in front of 91,553 fans.

The previous attendance record in club football was set in 2019 when 60,739 fans watched Atletico Madrid vs Barcelona in the Metropolitano in Madrid. The overall record for any women’s game, which set back in 1999 when the US beat China in the women’s World Cup final at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California, 90,195 people watched that game.

“The fans [are] not leaving for home, they’re just staying to celebrate with us. I didn’t imagine anything like it and it’s just goosebumps all over the place,” Barca forward Caroline Graham Hansen said immediately after the game.

“They have been singing all game and it’s been amazing. It’s something I never dreamed of happening and here today we did it. Hopefully it’s not the last time we’re doing this.”

In the other quarter final played last night Paris St Germain drew 2-2 with Bayern Munich to progress to the semi-final 4-3 on aggregate. PSG and Barcelona have been drawn in separate semi-finals.
