April 11 – Manchester City’s thrilling 2-2 draw with Liverpool on Sunday captivated television audiences across the globe in the race for the Premier League title but off the field City faces more scrutiny, this time over its official global betting partner Marathonbet, which is approved by the Kremlin for its gambling operations in Russia.
Marathonbet, which was established in Russia, Belarus and Kazakhstan in 1997, has had the tie-up with City since 2018. Under the deal, the firm agreed to provide branded betting kiosks for fans.
Since the invasion of Ukraine, other betting firms are reported to have shut down their operations in Russia. Marathonbet is still operating in Russia but says will no longer accept bets in the UK
Britain’s Guardian newspaper quoted a source at Manchester City as saying the sponsorship deal was “coming to an end” but Marathon bet still promotes its online betting operations with images of Manchester City players.
City remain one point clear of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League standings after the pulsating clash of the giants which kept the title race wide open.
