April 29 – Fiji will host the OFC Women’s Nations Cup 2022 in July with the winner earning a spot for the inter-continental playoffs on the road to the 2023 Women’s World Cup.
The competition had to be pushed back by the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC) because of the Covid-19 pandemic, but the OFC has confirmed that the tournament will be played in July in Fiji, with the teams split into three groups of three and the top two progressing to the knockout phase along with the two best third-placed teams.
The draw for the tournament will take place on May 10.
Fiji will compete alongside Cook Islands, Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Samoa, Solomon Islands, Tahiti, Tonga and Vanuatu for the right to play in the inter-confederation play-offs which will be staged in early 2023.
The OFC said that American Samoa will not participate in the Nations Cup because of the coronavirus crisis.
New Zealand, who will co-host the 2023 Women’s World Cup with Australia, have automatically qualified for the global finals. From the AFC, Japan, South Korea, China, the Philippines and Vietnam have all qualified while Chinese Taipei and Thailand can still seal their birth in the inter-confederation playoffs.
In Europe, Sweden, Spain and France have already qualified.
