Newcastle United officially unveil Saudi Arabian-looking third strip

June 29 – Already buffeted by criticism from human rights groups after being taken over by a Saudi-led consortium, Newcastle United, one of English football’s most fanatically supported clubs, face further disapproval after unveiling their third kit for the upcoming season – green and white, the colours on the Saudi Arabian flag.

The Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF) – of which Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman is chairman – owns 80% of Newcastle following their takeover in October 2021. At the time, they told the Premier League there was no connection between the PIF and Saudi state.

However the new kit is remarkably similar to that worn by the Saudi national team.

In statement Newcastle said: “Closely following the unveiling of its classic black and white home kit for the new campaign, the club has revealed a white and green third kit …that will be worn on the road.”

The Premier League approved the takeover after receiving “legally binding assurances” that the Saudi state would not control the club.

Newcastle are expected to challenge for honours next season following significant investment in the playing staff and an impressive end to the last campaign.

When the green and white photo of the new kit was first leaked in May Amnesty International said the traditional wearing the shirt would be “clear evidence” of sportswashing by the Saudi state.

It could also be a clever marketing gimmick to build support for the club in Saudi Arabia with Newcastle United having just announced online retailer Noon.com as the club’s sleeve sponsor. The club said the Saudi-based retail platform, also invested in by PIF, will make it easier for fans in the region to buy club merchandise.
