June 29 – Italy’s Serie A in future will be decided by a play-off game rather than the club records against each other, and then goal difference, according to a new ruling passed the league.
Current champions AC Milan finished the season two points ahead of cross town rivals Inter and there has not been a points tie at the top of the table since 1964 when Bologna tied with Inter on 54 points.
Bologna won the play-off 2-0 at the neutral venue of the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. They haven’t won a Serie A title since.
However, since the play off rule was abandoned in 2005, there has never been a points tie.
Now the one-off play-off is back in the rule book. If that match ends in a tie then penalties will decide the Serie A championship.
If three or more clubs tie at the top of the table on equal points, the top two going through to the play-off will be decided on a ranking based on games against each other and goal difference.
