December 4 – A KPMG report commissioned by LaLiga estimates a 55% revenue loss for the Spanish league if a European Super League came to fruition.
For LaLiga clubs outside a Super League the revenue loss would be even greater at 64%, says the report. It is a pattern that would be repeated across all Europe’s Big 5 leagues, says LaLiga.
According to LaLiga’s analysis, the revenues for Barcelona would increase by €400 million each with participation in a Super League. Across Europe it would likely lead to a reduction of total revenue currently sustaining football, rather than an increase.
In a hard-hitting rebuttal of the Super League proposition, LaLiga said: “The creation of a separatist and elitist league would mean the end of the European national leagues, end a European tradition of more than 100 years and break the dream of millions of fans of national competitions.”
Putting the threat into numbers, LaLiga points out the domestic leagues account for more than 70% of revenues in European football and are basic components in the economic and sporting ecosystem of European football. The 40 European professional leagues and associations generate a total revenue of €25.725 billion with €11 billion inaudiovisual rights.
LaLiga says that the concentration of power among a small number of teams would mean “the destruction of an industry”, including the loss of tens of thousands of jobs and reduction of tax revenues for the public purse across the continent. It would also destroy the European sports model that is based on meritocracy.
Speaking at the presentation of the report, Javier Tebas (pictured), president of Laliga, said: ”The format they are talking about is very detrimental to the national leagues, so they know that, if they explain it, the opposition to it will remain strong. Let’s hope the Super League doesn’t go ahead because it will destroy the local leagues and their supporters. We cannotallow football to be in the hands of the clubs with the most money, we have to find a balance”.
