January 5 – West Ham United joint-chairman and co-owner David Gold has died at the age of 86 on Wednesday following a short illness, the English Premier League club said.

A life-long West Ham fan, Gold became joint-chairman in 2010 having previously been chairman and co-owner of Birmingham City.

During his spells at both clubs, Gold was a hugely approachable figure when it came to the media, invariably willing to respond to the issues of the day.

He was a key figure, along with his business partner David Sullivan (who is also joint-chair of the club), in West Ham’s rebuilding after having bought the club from its financially troubled Icelandic owners. That progression saw a move to the London Stadium, the 65,000-capacity venue built for the London 2012 Olympics, in what is probably one of the best stadium deals of all-time for an English football club.

“On behalf of everyone at the football club, it is with profound sorrow and a heavy heart that we mourn the passing of our colleague and friend, David Gold,” said Sullivan.
