January 30 – Holders Liverpool crashed out of the FA Cup in the fourth round at Brighton on Sunday as their poor form continued, with Jurgen Klopp’s team currently ninth in the Premier League at the halfway stage.
“Of course, we wanted a new start, that was clear after the World Cup. So far it hasn’t happened properly, that’s true,” said a dejected Klopp after Brighton came from behind to win 2-1. “That means we have to keep working, there’s nothing else you can do.”
Liverpool next play away to Wolverhampton Wanderers on Saturday in the Premier League.
“We are obviously in a situation where we constantly want to make the final step, and that’s why it feels now especially bad in this moment because it didn’t happen,” said Klopp.
“We have to do better, body language with a couple of boys has to be much better, defending in the formation has to be better from a few.”
It may only be late January but Liverpool are already out of the FA Cup and League Cup and their only realistic chance of silverware this season is in the Champions League where a last-16 match-up against Real Madrid awaits next month.
“I feel sorry for the fans … We let them down again,” said Liverpool defender Andy Robertson.
