Argentina qualified as one of the four Conmebol guests at the W Gold Cup with a third placed finish at the 2022 Copa America Feminina.
What to expect
The current Argentinian women’s team does not have the storied history of their 2006 Copa America winning team, but it has the ambition.
Currently ranked 31st in the world, the team is going through a rebuilding phase as the national federation invests in its women’s development programme.
Argentina open their W Gold Cup against Mexico who they played in the Pan American Games semi-final last October, losing 2-0.
At the 2023 World Cup they lost 1-0 to Italy, drew 2–2 with South Africa before losing 2-0 to Sweden.
Coach German Portanova has promised his team will be competitive but recognised they were behind Mexico and the USA in terms of their development. But they are Argentina, and Argentina expects.
Star player
Dalila Ippolito is a skilfull 22 year old midfielder. She became the youngest Argentinian to compete at a Women’s World Cup at France 2019 when she came off the bench aged 17. In 2020, she transferred from River Plate to Juventus, going on to win the Serie A title and the Italian Super Cup, before a loan move to Parma in 2022. She currently plays at Pomigliano in Italy.
Striker Yamila Rodriguez, who plays for Brazil’s Palmeiras, leads Argentina’s attack. She scored six goals at the 2021 Copa America though has been less profligate since. Even so, she will be key to Argentina’s push to get out the group stage.
Debuting for Argentina in 2021, 23-year-old centreback Sophie Braun has already played 25 games for her adopted country, scoring twice. Born in the US, to an Argentinian mother, she plays her club football for Kansas City Current.
Manager
Germán Portanova played as a midfielder for clubs of Argentina, Chile, Paraguay and Spain. He began his coaching career at Argentina’s Club Deportivo UAI Urquiza where he was responsible for the club’s successful women’s team. He took over the national team in 2021, guiding them to 2023 Women’s World Cup.
