The Dominican Republic qualified for the preliminary knock-out stage as winners of Group B in Concacaf Nations League B, winning five games and losing just once, scoring 24 goals in the process.
What to expect
In the preliminary knockout stage they beat Guyana 1-0 in a game they dominated from start though missed multiple chances.
With players from the US college system mixed with a large number of players who are unattached, this is very much a developing team.
They are a young team with only two players over 25, and under Henry Parra they are well organised with a posession based game that make them attractive to watch.
However, they have a tough group opener against the USA who are hungry to hit the road to the Summer Olympics in Paris running. They then face Mexico and Argentina. It is a baptism of fire for this young group.
Players to watch
Midfielder Kat Gonzalez scored the vital goal with a shot from outside the box that saw the Dominican Republic into the group stage. Currently unattached, she will be a player closely watched by scouts this tournament.
Jazmin Jackson with four goals was the top scorer in qualifying. An exciting winger with good close control and the ability to beat a player, she can open up defences, though was used as a sub against Guyana. Leading the forward line is Mia Asenjo who has height and physical presence though did not have her best day against Guyana.
Manager
Colombian Henry Parra was appointed women’s national team coach in March 2023. Having spent his coaching career in the women’s game he has had national success at club level in Colombia and in Conmebol tournaments. He was appointed to develop the women’s game in the Dominican republic to a more competitive level.
