April 20 – All MLS teams will wear shirts made from recycled plastic this weekend in celebration of Earth Day.
Adidas, who supply all of the MLS with kit through a centralised deal, has produced a set of unique jerseys to be worn by teams in April 22 and 23 fixtures.
This is the fifth anniversary of the project which raises awareness of plastic pollution in the oceans around the world.
The adidas shirts are made from Parley Ocean plastic – a recycled material made from recycled plastic waste – and are handmade, with the design reflecting the depths of the oceans. Adidas collected plastic from remote islands, beaches and coastal communities before it can enter the oceans. After collection, the plastic is crushed, melted and mixed with a fibrous material.
Replica ‘Earth Day’ shirts are available for fans to buy.
The MLS has said that its goal is to be the most sustainable league in international football.
