Olimpiacos fans clash with police after loss to AEK ends their title hopes

April 25 – Olympiacos ran riot after the club’s 3-1 derby loss to AEK Athens that ended Olympiacos’ chances of winning the Greek Super League.

Olympiacos fans invaded the pitch after the final whistle, attacking the Italian referee Davide Massa and his assistants, and clashing with police.

The Greek police response was swift and the rioters were dispersed using tear gas.

During the match Olympiacos’ management argued persistently with the referee after AEK were awarded a penalty in the 80th minute. They demanded an explanation from the fourth referee in heated arguments that ran for nearly five minutes.

Following the defeat, Olympiacos remain in third place in the table but with no chance of winning the title battle with Panathinaikos and AEK Athens, who occupy the top two places with equal points.

According to the Disciplinary Rules of the Hellenic Football Federation, Olympiacos can be punished both financially and via stadium closures.

The fine for fans invading the stadium can range from €50,000 to €250,000, while the team could face up to four games without fans.
