May 2 – Bulgaria’s CSKA Sofia has unveiled its plans for the reconstruction of the Bulgarian Army stadium.
The new stadium, which will be built on the current facility in one of the largest parks in Sofia – Borisova Garden – and will cost between BGN 80-90 million(€40-45 million).
The capacity of the stadium will 16,000 seats. The stadium currently has 23,000 seats, but in reality, a large number of them are unusable.
Construction work will begin in the Autimn and will last 18 months. During this period CSKA will play home matches at the Vasil Levski national stadium.
Executive director of CSKA, Filip Filipov, said the finance for the project will be provided by the club’s owner Grisha Ganchev, and that the stadium would be the most modern in Bulgaria.
One of the main problems facing the club and the architects is that the plan does not include the mandatory parking for such facilities. The intention is for visitors to use the municipal parking lot near the stadium, as well as the subway parking lot.
At the same time, the club said it is looking for an external company to manage the stadium.
“I am not a financial expert. The club is looking for a partner to take care of the organization and management of the stadium. I guess depending on that partner, at some point the stadium will start to pay for itself. The financing of the stadium is fully provided by the owner. Fans should be assured that the stadium will be built. The investment is secured and it will not affect the budget of the football club. Will CSKA have the most modern stadium in Bulgaria? It is evident from the project, there is nothing more to comment on”, said Filipov.
