June 12 – Zagreb mayor Tomislav Tomašević has announced the construction of what he said will be the most modern stadium in Croatia.
To be built on the site of the Kranjčevićeva stadium, construction will begin next year at a cost of €20 million. The new facility will have a seating capacity of 12,000 and will be ready for use in 2025. The current stadium hold just 5,000.
“We started the reconstruction of the stadium in Kranjčevićeva, one of the three most important city projects to improve the city’s sports infrastructure… the stadium should be finished in the spring of 2025,” Tomašević said at a press conference held at the stadium itself.
The new stadium is expected to be used by the Dinamo Zagreb team while the reconstruction of the Maksimir Stadium in the centre of the Croatian capital is underway.
“Kranjčevićeva has a capacity of 5,000 seats, and we will build one of the most modern stadiums in Europe that will accommodate 12,000 spectators, with four fully covered stands and a multifunctional parking lot. Funds for reconstruction have been secured from the city budget, and we hope that money from UEFA, given that it will be a category 4 stadium according to UEFA regulations, where European matches will be played and where the Croatian national team will be able to play,” he added.
The stadium in Kranjčevićeva will be a modern, sustainable and green project, said Deputy Mayor Luka Korlaet.
“In addition to the four stands, which will resemble residential buildings from the outside with greenery and planters into which rainwater will be delivered from the roof, a new town square will be built along Kranjčevićeva Street and a multifunctional parking lot, which will be used by citizens for recreation when there are no matches because there will be mini-football, tennis and basketball courts on it. There will be large solar panels on the roof that will power the stadium,” said Korlaet.
