July 10 – Former Ajax CEO and Netherlands keeper Edwin van der Sar is in intensive care in hospital after suffering a bleed around his brain.
His condition is “stable but still concerning” said a brief Ajax statement after the 52-year-old, who also had an influential role with European Clubs’ Association, was hospitalised, adding he “will remain in intensive care for the time being” in Croatia, where he was on holiday.
Van der Sar, who won 130 caps for his country, resigned from his role as Ajax chief executive in May after the side finished third in the Dutch league and failed to qualify for the Champions League for the first time since 2009.
He retired from playing after leaving Manchester United in 2011 before joining the Ajax board in 2012, becoming the club’s chief executive four years later.
“After nearly 11 years on the board, I’m exhausted,” Van der Sar said when he announced he was leaving Ajax in May.
