Italy’s Serie A to treat British and Swiss players as EU citizens to boost transfer quotas

July 31 – British and Swiss players are to be treated as European Union (EU) citizens in Italy following a request made by Serie A, allowing Italian teams to free up space to sign non-EU players.

Italian clubs are currently only permitted to register two non-EU players each season, a rule which remained in place after Britain left the EU in 2020.

“Players with Swiss and British citizenship are equivalent to EU players in all respects,” FIGC said in a statement following a Federal Council meeting on Monday.

The new rules will apply from the start of the forthcoming season.

The decision will be welcomed by AC Milan, among others, who signed English midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek from Chelsea in June.

The restriction led some clubs prioritising players from other non-EU countries but with the new ruling, players with British and Swiss passports will now be on equal footing with EU citizens in terms of registration at Serie A clubs.
