De Bruyne, Haaland and Messi vie for UEFA men’s Player of Year award

August 18 – Two Manchester City players and the ubiquitous Lionel Messi are the top three nominees for the 2022/23 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award.

Kevin De Bruyne and Erling Haaland, the creative driving force and the goals behind Man City’s treble winning season, are up against PSG (now Inter Miami’s) Lionel Messi.

The winner of the award will be announced at the 2023/24 Champions League group stage draw ceremony, August 31 in Monaco.

At the same time the winner of the 2022/23 season Men’s Coach of the Year award will be announced with the final three nominees being Man City’s Pep Guardiola and two Italian managers; Inter Milan’s Simone Inzaghi, and SSC Napoli’s Luciano Spalletti.

For both the men’s award and the coaches award, a shortlist of players was selected by the UEFA technical study group based on performances during the 2022/23 season at both club and national team level.

Coaches of the clubs which played in the group stages of the 2022/23 Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League, together with the coaches of the UEFA men’s national teams then selected their top three payers. A group of journalists selected by the European Sports Media (ESM) were also part of the jury.

Once the top three were identified, Coaches and journalists were then asked to rank the shortlisted three by allocating them five points, three points and one point respectively.
