Ajax vs Feyenoord game abandoned as fans run riot; club fires Mislintat amid transfer concerns

September 25 – In crisis mode, Amsterdam giants Ajax have dismissed their director of football Sven Mislintat with immediate effect, the Dutch club said on Sunday. The dismissal follows the abandonment of Ajax’s league match against rivals Feyenoord Rotterdam on Sunday.

It’s the second time in quick succession that Ajax have parted ways with their director of football after Marc Overmars departed in May following allegations of harassment toward female staff members at the club.

Mislintat’s exit is also controversial. He is under investigation by the club over the transfer of Borna Sosa, signed by Ajax through a German agency that has shares in a company owned by Mislintat. However, Ajax framed his dismissal in different terms.

“Several attempts to restore broad support have not led to the desired outcome. This leads to unrest in and around the club, also due to the disappointing results,” said Ajax interim CEO Jan van Halst in a statement.

In the summer, Mislintat brought 12 players to the Dutch capital for a combined transfer fee of €110 million, but those new players have not helped Ajax much this season. Ajax linger in 14th position and a new nadir was reached on Sunday when the match with arch-rivals Feyenoord had to be abandoned after flans threw flares on the pitch and the referee repeatedly interrupted proceedings.

After the visitors took a 3-0 lead and fans caused more unrest, the referee decided to abandon the match.

Outside the stadium, mounted police confronted rioting fans.
