October 9 – Wayne Rooney has left his management role at MLS outfit DC United after his team failed to reach the MLS playoffs for the fourth straight season.
Rooney’s departure comes despite a 2-0 win against NYCFC in the final game of the regular season. It was only their 10th league win of the season with the side drawing 10 and losing 14 of their other 24 MLS outings this term.
Manchester United’s record goalscorer took up the role with the Washington-based side in July 2022. He had previously spent 18 months at the club as a player before he joined Derby as player-coach in January 2020.
The club’s CEO and co-chairman, Jason Levien, said: “We have spoken with Wayne and agreed it is best for us to part ways at this time. This decision creates the avenue for our next general manager to have the full opportunity to impart a new philosophy and structure on to our sporting operations, which begins with the critical identification of a head coach who will best align with this.
“We are grateful to Wayne Rooney for all he has done for our club and for soccer in the nation’s capital, first as a DC United player and captain and most recently as our coach. He remains an important part of the DC United family and a valued and cherished friend.”
Speaking of his departure, Rooney said: “It’s the right time. I’ve done everything I can to get this club into the play-offs. It’s not a single thing that’s happened. It’s about timing.”
Rumours in England are that the ex-England international is headed for championship side Birmingham City.
Birmingham City sacked manager John Eustace this morning. The club are under new ownership and currently lie in a play-off position the Championship.
Despite heavy links to the now-vacant Birmingham City job, Rooney said: “New job? I’ve nothing lined up.”
