October 30 – The rumoured sale of the world’s oldest professional football club, Notts County, to pop star Taylor Swift has been quickly played down by the club.
The bizarre story emerged in Spoof newspaper The Weekend Sport which reported that Swift was keen to buy County, known as the Magpies, following in the footsteps of Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney who own English fourth-tier club Wrexham.
County are also in the fourth tier and the two sides ironically played each other on Saturday in front of more than 16,000 fans.
In a statement County owners Chris and Alex Reedtz said they were sorry to “disappoint the Swifties in our fanbase” in a Tweet laden with tongue in cheek references to Swift lyrics.
“There’s certainly no bad blood between ourselves and Taylor but, at such an exciting time for us and the club, she surely couldn’t have believed in her wildest dreams that we would relinquish our control,” they added. “We’re going to have to shake this story off.”
