Carille tasked with returning Santos to Brazilian top tier

December 20 – Brazilian club Santos have tasked Fabio Carille with steering the club back to the top flight, confirming his appointment earlier this week.

“We have started the reconstruction of Santos: Fabio Carille will be our commander on the way back to achievements and days of joy, from the beginning of 2024”, said Santos chairman Marcelo Teixeira.

“In his second spell at Santos and with a great track record, Carille arrives with the role of reviewing and redefining the squad within the new rules and guidelines that we are implementing. Santos is great again.”

Carille most recently coached V-Varen Nagasaki, but had expressed his desire to return to his native Brazil. In 2021, he managed Santos and saved the club from the drop. He has also coached Sao Paulo giants Corinthians.

This time however Carille will need to guide Santos back to the Serie A. For the first time in the 111-year history of the club, Santos got relegated from the topflight. On the final day of the season, Santos were defeated 2-1 by Fortaleza, condemning the seaside outfit to Serie B.

The relegation sparked riots in the city and a crisis at the club, which will have to be rebuilt constrained by a far smaller budget with 150 million reais less revenue expected.

Santos rose to global acclaim in the 1960s when Pele and co played their way to two Copa Libertadores victories and one Intercontinental Cup. Exporting the best of Brazilian football, they crisscrossed the world playing exhibition matches.
