Opened in 1975, the stadium underwent renovation in 2004 and 2010. It is the home to Al Sadd SC, and hosted matches during the Asian Cup Qatar 2011, including the quarter-final stage as well as the third place playoff.
The stadium is regularly used for showcase football matches. During the 2014/2015 season, it hosted the Italian Super Copa between Napoli and Juventus.
