January 19 – Egypt lost Mohamed Salah to injury before coming from behind twice to draw 2-2 with Ghana in their potentially decisive Africa Cup of Nations match on Thursday.
Mohammed Kudus scored both goals for the Black Stars but Omar Marmoush and Mostafa Mohamed put a dent in the four-time champions’ hopes of making the knockout stage.
Ghana remain bottom of Group B with just one point, level with Mozambique, while Egypt are second on two points behind group leaders Cape Verde.
Cape Verde and Mozambique were playing their second game of the tournament today. Only the top two in each group are assured of advancing.
Egypt’s hopes of a record-extending eighth title suffered a blow before halftime when Salah limped off holding his left thigh and they now face an anxious wait.
Nigeria, meanwhile, defeated hosts Ivory Coast 1-0 courtesy of a second-half penalty.
The Super Eagles were under pressure after drawing their opening game against Equatorial Guinea and are now all but certain of reaching the knockout stage.
But Côte d’Ivoire dropped to third in Group A on three points, one behind Equatorial Guinea and Nigeria with a crunch game against Equatorial Guinea to come on Monday.
