February 14 – Tottenham Hotspur reportedly hold no fears of keeping hold of fan-favourite Ange Postecoglou despite the Australian being touted among the potential successors to Jurgen Klopp at Liverpool.
Postecoglou’s ‘heavily incentivised’ contract at Spurs would see him rewarded for qualification for the Champions League if Tottenham can keep up their positive form, which the club feel is enough to fend off interest from Merseyside.
Klopp announced his intention to leave Liverpool at the end of the current season, sparking a scramble to seal a top-level manager come June.
Bayer Leverkusen’s Xabi Alonso, whose high-flying side comfortably dispatched title rivals FC Bayern at the weekend in a statement 3-0 victory, is the bookmakers’ name top of the shortlist, with Tottenham boss Ange Postecoglou not far behind.
Leverkusen have spoken out against Alonso leaving the club in the summer, insisting that the Spaniard is happy and comfortable in Germany, where he has transformed the squad into quite possibly the most dominant in world football.
If Alonso rejects a move to his former club, Postecoglou’s status as a ‘massive’ Liverpool fan, which he personally admitted upon signing for the North London club, could be a cause of concern for the Spurs faithful.
Postecoglou himself has suggested the possibility of establishing a long-term presence in London, expressing his willingness to stay at Tottenham if the club continues to be satisfied with his contributions.
His side will face Wolves on Saturday as they look to maintain their stay in the Champions League places with Villa breathing down their necks. The return of James Maddison from injury and Son Heung Min from the Asian Cup will be a boost for the Lilywhites, who impressed with a scintillating start to the season when the squad was fully fit.
