June 7 – San Diego and Portland Thorns of the NWSL have been drawn in the same group with Club America of Mexico for the inaugural WConcacaf Champions Cup. Panama’s Santa Fe FC and the winners of the premliminary round play-in will make up the five-team group.
In Group B NJ/NY Gotham will face the LigaMX duo of Tigres, CF Monterrey. LD Alajuelense from Costa Rica, and Frazsiers Whip from Jamaica make up the group. Gotham currently sit fifth in the NWSL and will be gald to be in the opposite side of the draw to 4th paces Portland Thorns.
In the preliminary round Canada’s Vancouver Whitecaps will travel to El Salvador to meet Alianza Women FC.
The W Champions Cup draw was held yesterday in Miami alongside the unveiling of the brand design and anthem.
Concacaf said “the selected colors represent the grit and intensity of this competition, while the logo evokes the silhouette of the trophy, the ultimate prize, and includes a Triple C in the center, the initials of the Concacaf Champions Cup”.
The tournament tagline is ‘For Greatness’, which is also the title of the anthem, composed by musician and producer Matt Clifford.
Group play beings in August 2024 and runs through to mid-October. The two group winners will qualify for the final four that will be played at a yet to be named centralised venue in May 2025. The winner of the W Champions Cup will qualify for the inaugural Women’s Club World Cup in 2025.
