Arsenal fork out €40m to reinforce defence in bid to upset Man City’s supremacy

July 30 – Ahead of the new Premier League season, Arsenal have reinforced their defence with the signing of rising Italian star defender Riccard Calafiori from Bologna.

The Italian impressed at the Euro 2024, even if Italy exited the tournament in the round of 16, and the London club had been leading the dance to acquire his services. On Monday, Arsenal confirmed the Italian will call North London home in a long-term deal.  Last season, Calafiori was a key player in Bologna’s historic qualification for the Champions League.

“We welcome Riccardo and his family to Arsenal. He is a great signing and gives us huge strength to reinforce our defence,” said Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta said in a statement. “Riccardo is a big personality and character, with specific skills which will make us stronger as we push to win major trophies…We’re looking forward to working with Riccardo, integrating him into the squad, and supporting him in the years to come.”

The terms of the deal were not disclosed but British media report that Arsenal will pay Bologna around €40 million and €5 million in add-on fees.

“We identified Riccardo as part of our strategy to sign players who fit our profile and will reinforce our squad to compete at the highest level,” said Arsenal sporting director Edu. “He is 22 but brings quality and experience. He will quickly grow into being an Arsenal player.”

“Riccardo has consistently shown his quality for his club and country. He was one of the best players in Serie A last season, and gave strong performances for Italy in the Euros this summer. Mikel and our coaches are excited to start working with Riccardo, and we all look forward to seeing him in our shirt.”

The Italian has joined Arsenal on their pre-season tour in the United States where they will play Liverpool next. The Londoners get their Premier League campaign underway on August 17 against Wolves. Last season, they finished runners-up behind serial champions Manchester City.
