Transfer talk: Guehi set to stick with Newcastle, Liverpool scout overseas markets

August 6 – Newcastle are closing in on the signing of Crystal Palace and England defender Marc Guehi, with a figure of £60 million rumoured to be enough to secure the 24-year-old’s services. The player impressed during England’s run to the final of Euro 2024, becoming the standout player of a star-studded back line in his first major tournament with England.

Linked with Liverpool and Manchester City in recent weeks, it looks as though Newcastle have broken away as the favourites to sign Guehi.

Liverpool have been linked with a mystery number six, with the club still yet to open their wallet this transfer window. The only clue has been that the club are looking for talent outside of the Premier League.

Liverpool have been long-term admirers of PSG’s out-of-favour midfielder Manuel Ugarte – they were just pipped to the Uruguayan’s signature this time last summer – and could return to pursue a cut-price move for the 23-year-old. Manchester United were also linked with the player but have since ‘turned away’ from a potential deal.

Tottenham have held talks about signing Bournemouth’s English striker Dominic Solanke and are keen to make progress in a move for the 26-year-old, whose release clause is thought to be worth about £65 million. The club are keen to finally replace top scorer Harry Kane over 12 months since his move to FC Bayern. Solanke tallied 19 goals for Bournemouth last season and has a market value of €40m according to Transfermarkt –  a fee that lies significantly under Bournemouth’s €75 million asking price.

Chelsea could move for Celtic’s Danish midfielder Matt O’Riley, 23, with England midfielder Conor Gallagher, 24, set to join Atletico Madrid.
