EBU deal ensures Women’s Euros 2025 stays free-to-air

August 15 – The European Broadcast Union (EBU) has secured broadcast rights to the UEFA Women’s Euro 2025 finals, covering 34 territories.

With 37 EBU broadcasters, including BBC and ITV, ARD and ZDF, the agreement ensures the tournament will be shown free-to-air in the vast majority of European countries in a deal that builds on a previous agreement between the EBU and the European governing body for Euro 2022.

“This agreement for Uefa Women’s Euro 2025 is unprecedented in terms of broadcast reach and reinforces our commitment to showcasing women’s football, ensuring it continues to grow and thrive,” said EBU executive director Glen Killane.

“The deal reflects the core strategy of the EBU and its members of enhancing the promotion of women’s sports with strong and even more increased members’ coverage complemented by the women’s football offer on Eurovision Sport.”

Other prominent broadcasters will include Belgium’s VRT, Croatia’s HRT, Austria’s ORF and host nation Switzerland’s SRG and SSR.

The Euro 2022 final attracted an audience of 17.4 million on the BBC. Alex Kay-Jelski, director of BBC Sport, said: “BBC Sport has been a long-time supporter of the women’s game and the BBC is committed to bringing the nation together for the biggest sporting moments. We’re excited that we can bring another major tournament to audiences next summer across the BBC.”

Switzerland will host the tournament in July 2025 after seeing off rival bids from the Nordic countries, France and Poland.

Ahead of last year’s Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, FIFA president Gianni Infantino had warned that the five leading European football nations could miss out on broadcasting the tournament unless offers for the broadcast rights significantly improved.

Ultimately, the EBU and FIFA struck a deal that saw the Women’s World Cup broadcast in 34 territories.
