Foden and Shaw scoop PFA players of the season awards

August 21 – Manchester City duo Phil Foden and Khadeja ‘Bunny’ Shaw have been voted the Professional Football Association (PFA) Players of the Season.

Foden became the fourth City player in five years to win the prize, three months after he claimed the FWA (Football Writers’ Association) Footballer of the Year award. He received the prize at the PFA’s Awards dinner in Manchester on Tuesday. The 24-year-old was pivotal in his club’s fourth consecutive Premier League title, scoring 19 times and providing eight assists.

The former Jamaican striker Shaw (she withdrew with the rest of the Reggae Girlz team over treatment by the Jamaican FA) prevailed as the PFA’s Women’s Player of the Season after she top scored in the Women’s Super League with 21 goals, eight goals clear of both Lauren James and Elisabeth Terland. Ultimately, City were piped for the title by Chelsea.

Shaw also won the FWA award as Women’s Footballer of the Year at the end of last season.

City players Lauren Hemp and Yui Hasegawa also made the top six shortlist, alongside Chelsea trio Erin Cuthbert, Niamh Charles, and Lauren James.

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer was chosen as Young Player of the Year, with Manchester United’s Grace Clinton winning the women’s prize, but Palmer didn’t make the PFA Team of the Season.
