FIFA trials FVS as Colombia open home hosted U-20 World Cup with a win

September 2 – Hosts Colombia got the U-20 Women’s World Cup underway with a 2-0 victory against Australia in a tournament that will serve as a trial for the football support system (FVS).

With FIFA boss, Gianni Infantino in attendance at a packed El Campin Stadium in Bogota, the Colombians secured all three points in their curtain-raiser with second-half goals from Yunaira Moreno and Linda Caicedo, the team’s star who also featured at this summer’s Olympic Games.

In the second half, Australia had a goal ruled out for a fault in the build-up play after the referee consulted the FVS.

The system was previously tested at the Blue Stars Cup. Different from VAR, FIFA describes FVS as a “more affordable technology” that “can be used to review the same kind of incidents as those covered by VAR.”

FIFA said that the “the onus falls on the two head coaches, who are allowed to make a limited number of review requests per match when they feel there has been a clear and obvious error in match -changing incidents such as goal/no goal, penalty/no penalty, direct red cards or mistaken identity.”

In other results this weekend, Brazil trashed Fiji 9-0, Spain edged the United States 1-0 and Germany defeated Venezuela 5-2.  Canada held France to a 3-3 draw and Nigeria overcame South Korea 1-0.

Bogota, Cali and Medellin will serve as host cities for the tournament that culminates on September 22 with the final. Two years ago, Spain defeated Japan 3-1 to win the U-20 title in Costa Rica. Brazil claimed the bronze medal, beating the Netherlands 4-1 in the third-place play-off.
