September 3 – Confederation of African Football (CAF) president Patrice Motsepe has suggested that his organisation’s payments to member associations should also benefit the secretary generals of those countries.
Speaking at an event in Cape Town, the South African billionaire said: “The secretary-general has got a family. He’s got a wife and children or a husband and children. And again, just like the president, we cannot pay them enough. We have to look at those things and make sure we pay our people.
“Those (member associations) who’ve got money, it’s not an issue. They don’t need it. But I’m not worried about those who’ve got money. I’m proud of that. I’m worried about 65, 70% if not 80% of those member associations where their challenges and their problems.”
It’s not the first time that Motsepe has advocated for better pay for football officials on the continent. In 2017, under the rule of Ahmad Ahmad, CAF decided to give presidents of African FAs a compensatory allowance of $20,000.
African media have previously reported that Motsepe himself does not take a salary from CAF.
“One of my main responsibilities is on those countries where there’s not sufficient resources, not sufficient finance, not sufficient infrastructure development. And that’s why we have increased, doubled what we give the member associations,” said Motsepe.
