September 19 – While most countries put the heads of royal families and heads of state on their currency, Portugal is putting Cristiano Ronaldo’s on a €7 coin.
The €7 coin is inspired by their all-time lead goalscorer’s iconic shirt number, and is destined to become a ‘major money maker’ according to a coin expert.
The coin will feature an image of the five-time Ballon d’Or award winner and ‘CR7’ embossed on it.
The decision was taken to mark Ronaldo’s illustrious career. The 39-year-old has tallied 130 goals for his national team and been at the centre of huge footballing moments for his country, including leading Portugal to a historic victory in Euro 2016 and lifting the UEFA Nations League trophy with A Selecao in 2019.
Ronaldo, who recently became the first person in history to surpass one billion followers across social media, will have his face embossed on the coin, which will be recognised as an official currency.
Dan Barrett, a precious metals expert from Pacific Precious Metals, has hinted that the coin’s worth will greatly surpass its €7 value, predicting it to become a ‘huge’ hit among collectors and fans, with prices expected to skyrocket due to its limited availability.
“With Cristiano Ronaldo’s status as one of the most recognisable athletes in the world, the CR7 Euro coin is expected to draw tremendous interest from both collectors and fans alike. Given the coin’s gold content and Ronaldo’s worldwide following, we could see this coin selling up to $150,000 on the collector’s market.
“The combination of a limited edition, gold content, and Ronaldo’s brand will ensure this coin’s value appreciates rapidly, especially once it hits the secondary market. Collectors will see it as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The 39-year-old surpassed 900 career goals against Croatia earlier this month, with one eye on becoming the first man to officially tally 1000 professional goals by the end of his career.
