FC Dallas $182m renovation of Toyota Stadium greenlighted

September 20 – FC Dallas has been given the green light by the Frisco City Council for a $182 million public-private partnership to renovate their Toyota Stadium in Frisco, Texas.

Work will begin in 2025 with the full renovation to be complete in the first quarter of 2028 in time the MLS season kick-off.

The stadium’s capacity will increase by about 3,400 seats from the current 20,500 capacity. More importantly for the commercial side, higher priced club seating capacity will increase by 175%, and suite capacity by 58%.

The Toyota Stadium has a special place in US soccer history, being the MLS’s

third-oldest soccer-specific venue. It has regularly hosted Concacaf Gold Cup games and earlier this year hosted the final Concacaf play-in matches for the CopaAmerica which was played in the US in the summer.

“When Toyota Stadium opened in 2005, it was a state-of-the-art facility that was ahead of its time, and the stadium’s success has helped pave the way for dozens of other soccer-specific stadiums across the country,” FC Dallas Chairman and CEO Clark Hunt said.

“Today, we are delighted to announce these renovations which will modernize the stadium and elevate the fan experience, once again establishing Toyota Stadium as one of the premier facilities in Major League Soccer.”

Key elements of the renovation include a new, ‘visually distinctive’, that will provide shade for the majority of seats in the stadium bowl; and cutting edge audio-visual technology including new scoreboards, video signage and a sound system.

The stadium will also have the largest video board in the MLS in a soccer-specific venue, measuring 6,000 sq ft.

With a phased development, FC Dallas will continue to be able to play at the stadium while the building works are in progress.

Funding will come from a public-private partnership between the City of Frisco and Frisco Independent School District ($77 million), the Frisco Community Development Corporation ($40 million), with the  Hunt Family contributing $65 million.
