Romanian FA blows final whistle on scandal-hit Nordis’ referees sponsorship

October 23 – The Romanian Football Federation has terminated its sponsorship contract with Nordis Group. The real estate company was the main sponsor of the FRF Referees Committee, and its logo was on the shirts of the Romanian referees.

The contract was terminated following the real estate scandal that has merged in Bucharest, which Nordis has been in the centre of.

“The Romanian Football Federation announces the termination of the partnership with Nordis Group, which supported the activity of the Central Commission of Referees. The collaboration, intended to support the development and modernization programs of Romanian arbitration, will no longer continue as of today,” said a federation statement.

“Investing in the training of referees is an essential element for ensuring quality refereeing in national and international competitions. In this sense, the FRF is committed to finding a new strategic partner that will contribute to the continuous improvement of the training level of Romanian referees.”

The Nordis Group has been in the middle of a real estate fraud scandal for several weeks in Romania, standing accused of collecting money in advance from several investors for the construction of hundreds of apartments that the company did not complete.

The Bucharest Court already has a file regarding the opening of the insolvency procedure of Nordis Management SRL. Currently, the procedure is in the stage of the first measures of the observation period, namely that of notifying all creditors, drawing up the preliminary table of creditors, inventorying and evaluating the company’s assets.

Following the scandal, several politicians in Romania announced that they would submit a draft law called ‘Nordis’ to the Parliament. Under this law, real estate developers will not be able to ask a buyer for an advance of more than 10-15% of the property’s value.
