AFC turns the camera on its match officials for five-episode docu-series

October 27 – Asian referees are the focus of a documentary series with behind the scenes footage from the Asian Cup Qatar 2023, that was played last January-February.

Produced by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC), the five-episode series titled Beyond the Field, examines the roles and responsibilities of match officials at the Qatar finals that had 74 appointed referees.

Each episode focuses on a distinct aspect of refereeing at the AFC’s showpiece finals, journeying through the extensive preparations of the referees, including their participation in key events like the Qatar 2023 Referees Seminar and the Asian Cup Qatar 2023 Preparatory Course, held in the lead-up to the competition.

The series documents the full debut of the VAR technology at an AFC finals and the historic appointment of women officials.

The final episode, AFC Asian Cup and the Road to the FIFA World Cup 2026, examines the road ahead for the officials as they compete for selection to officiate at the global finals.
