Floods wash out football in Valencia region as Spain begins process of mourning and repair

November 1 – The torrential rains in Spain that have resulted in tragic deaths, and indescribable destruction have put a halt to Spanish football in the Valencia region. In the space of eight hours, a year’s worth of rain fell creating unexpected flash flooding events.

The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced that all games in that part of the country will be rescheduled. The Spanish government also declared three days of mourning with at least 104 people dead and “many people” missing following this week’s torrential rain.

A spokesman from the RFEF said: “The RFEF have agreed this Thursday to postpone several matches due to be held this weekend in the Valencian Community, which has been severely affected by DANA that has caused fatalities and numerous material damages due to flooding.”

“Beyond the postponements, Spanish football wanted to show its solidarity with the people affected, especially with the families of those who have died in this natural disaster,” the RFEF added.

In La Liga, Real Madrid’s visit to Valencia, the match between Villarreal and Rayo Vallecano, along with Levante’s home game versus Malaga in the 2nd division have been cancelled. Women’s matches, youth games, and futsal games were also postponed.

The league announced that a minute’s silence will be observed ahead of all games to be played this weekend to show respect for the victims of the devastating flash floods.
