BBC boosts Premier League output with audio commentary rights win

November 8 – BBC Radio 5 Live continues to be the gold standard when it comes to match commentary and to the delight of thousands of listeners, the platform has retained the Premier League audio commentary rights until the 2028/29 season in a new four-year deal.

The Beeb as it is affectionally known, has secured four of the six audio packages available, meaning that from next year, its 5 Live radio channel will be bringing audiences together to enjoy live commentary of 209 matches per season.

Each, and every week, fans of the beautiful game will enjoy at least five of the ten fixtures as they’ll be available on both 5 Live and BBC Sounds, including exclusive commentary on two 3pm kick-off Saturday matches.

Heidi Dawson, Controller of BBC Radio 5 Live and 5 Sports Extra said: “With more live commentary matches than ever before, BBC Radio 5 Live remains the home of Premier League football. For the next four years’ 5 Live will bring football fans the biggest games across the weekend, with all the drama and excitement from the world’s greatest football league.”

The package secured by 5 Live includes the two Saturday matches as mentioned as well as the 5.30pm Saturday game and the 2pm and 4.30pm matches on Sunday.

The commentary team consists of seasoned sports broadcasters and former players who bring insights and analysis to the matches. Their expertise enhances the listening experience, making it feel as if you are right there in the stadium.

Fans can listen to live broadcasts through various platforms, including AM, DAB radio, online streaming, and the BBC Sounds app. This flexibility allows listeners to catch matches wherever they are.

As the self-proclaimed world’s greatest league, this is a major coup for the BBC as they have struggled mightily competing against the satellite providers for TV rights.
