December 4 – The Saudi Pro League (SPL) has inaugurated a dedicated workspace for LaLiga within its Riyadh headquarters. This initiative marks another step in the SPL’s strategy to forge international partnerships and drive up their place in the sport.
The workspace, designed for use by LaLiga and Spanish clubs, officially opened on December 2, marking a new chapter in the collaboration between the two leagues.
It also aligns with LaLiga’s global strategy, which includes representation in 34 countries through 11 international offices. A LaLiga delegate will be based in Riyadh to oversee the partnership and facilitate future collaborations.
LaLiga have been in the forefront of Saudi collaboration from the beginning of the kingdom’s football expansion.
The Supercopa de España has been played in Saudi Arabia four times in the past five years, save for the Covid-stricken 2021 edition, as the Spanish federation (RFEF) were incentivised to breathe life into Saudi’s fledgling football profile building.
LaLiga president Javier Tebas added: “LaLiga is committed to supporting the growth of the sports and entertainment industry in Saudi Arabia. This workspace marks a new chapter in our relationship with the region and the SPL, and we are confident that this partnership will pave the way for exciting new projects.”
The Saudi Pro League has become one of the AFC’s top national leagues and home to a number of elite players thanks to mega investment from the country’s Public Investment fund.
SPL CEO Omar Mugharbel commented: “This collaboration represents a vital step in forging closer ties between the SPL and other leagues, showcasing our dedication to opening the SPL to the world.” He also underscored the partnership’s role in exchanging best practices and driving innovation within the league.
