December 10 – Argentinian giants River Plate have announced the introduction of facial recognition technology at their iconic Estadio Mâs Monumental, enabling fans to ‘enjoy quick, secure, and ticketless access’.
The FaceID system, developed in partnership with biometric technology company Veridas, will feature 300 terminals installed across the stadium. Initial deployment begins this month, with full implementation scheduled for February 2025.
The new technology allows registered fans to enter the 84,567-capacity venue in under a second, in an effort to enhance convenience and security of stadium operations often plagued by delays and obstructions. In full flow, the system will reportedly enable the entry of more than 60 people per minute, whilst eliminating the need for physical or digital tickets.
By requiring users to complete a 10-second registration process via mobile phone, the system allows only verified individuals to gain access.
Much of the technology already exists in newer models of the iPhone, so it is a natural step to bring this efficiency into football stadium infrastructure to solve a glaring problem.
River Plate touts the FaceID system as a significant upgrade in fan experience.
“River Plate is synonymous with innovation. With the FaceID system, our fans will enjoy faster, safer, and more convenient access to the Mâs Monumental,” said River Plate secretary general Stefano Di Carlo.
“This initiative strengthens our commitment to delivering the best experience for the River family and establishes our stadium as a global benchmark for sporting events.”
“Our robust, efficient, and secure solution ensures an unparalleled experience for fans. This partnership sets a new standard for how football is experienced in Argentina and beyond,” said Veridas chief executive Eduardo Azanza.
Much of the world will keep an eye on how the project unfolds in South America, with the potentially to changing the face of Stadium security in years to come.
