US women stay top of the world as ranking grows to 195 nations

December 16 – The United States Women’s National Team (USWNT) will close out 2024 at the summit of the FIFA world rankings, reclaiming their dominance after a turbulent year. The latest update, released on Friday, confirms their position ahead of reigning World Cup champions Spain, who remain in second place.

Emma Hayes’ squad delivered a series of impressive performances during the recent international fixtures, further cementing their lead at the top. This achievement caps off a resurgent year for the Americans, who also clinched Olympic gold during the summer, signalling a return to their formidable best.

The USWNT spent five and a half years at the top of the world rankings from 2017 to April 2023.

The rankings update also brought significant movement below the top two. Germany climbed to third place after a thrilling 4-3 victory over the Lionesses at Wembley in October, a result that pushed England down to fourth.

The defeat compounded a frustrating year for Sarina Wiegman’s side, who had previously held the second spot but struggled to maintain their momentum after a strong World Cup showing that saw them runners-up to Spain in 2023.

Meanwhile, Spain’s second-place finish reflects their sustained excellence, but questions remain over whether they can reclaim the top spot in 2025.

Gibraltar (185th) are the latest nations to join the women’s ranking, taking the total number of ranked countries to 195.

With key tournaments like the Women’s EURO and Copa América on the horizon next year, the battle for the top of the rankings promises to be as competitive as ever.
