Everton’s US owners fire Dyche with Moyes in talks over a return

January 10 – In the first big call by the club’s new American owners, Everton fired manager Sean Dyche on Thursday just three hours before playing an FA Cup match.

Everton are 16th in the standings after 19 games, a point above the drop zone and have not won a league game since beating Wolverhampton Wanderers in early December.

Although they came through 2-0 against tier-3 Peterborough United in the third round of the cup, Dyche had already left along with his backroom staff.

One of the sleeping giants of English football – a nine-time league champion but without a major trophy since 1995 and constantly in the shadow of neighbours Liverpool in recent years – Everton were bought last month by the Texas-based Friedkin Group in a deal reportedly worth in excess of £400 million, and are close to moving into a new stadium.

Dyche took charge in January 2023 and kept Everton in the top-flight despite last season’s points deduction for breaching Premier League rules on profit and sustainability.

Although he maintained Everton’s record of being ever-present in English football’s top-flight since 1954, fans were unhappy with the team’s dull style of play.

In terms of his replacement, it appears former Everton manager David Moyes is on the verge of an emotional return to the club 12 years after he left for Manchester United.

The Scot, whose first spell between 2002 and 2013 was largely successful, has been out of work since leaving West Ham at the end of last season.

Whilst a popular choice, Moyes would certainly have his work cut out at a side once again battling to avoid relegation after winning just one of their past 11 games.
