California’s deadly fires force US women’s team to relocate training camp

January 13 – The deadly wildfires in Southern California have displaced thousands of residents, and after discussions, the United States Women’s National Team, who were due to have a January training camp will also be on the move.

U.S. Soccer has made the decision to move the camp, as well as the Futures Camp featuring up-and-coming USWNT prospects who are all age-eligible for the US U-23 Women’s National Team that would have run concurrently.

The camp will feature 50 players will start three days later than previously planned and run from January 17-23 at Inter Miami CF’s Florida Blue Training Center in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida.

US Soccer sporting director Matt Crocker said: “The safety of our players and staff is always our top priority, and with the fires still burning, many areas in a state of emergency, and the air quality next week an unknown, we made the decision to move the camps. Our hearts go out to all those affected in Southern California and our sincere gratitude goes to all the first responders and volunteers helping to navigate this tragedy. We also want to thank Inter Miami for accommodating us on such short notice and enabling us to run two training camps in a world-class facility.”

English head coach, Emma Hayes, has named 24 players to the 2025 Futures Camp. The roster contains 14 professional players – 13 from the NWSL and one from the USL Super League. The players come from six different birth years – 2002 through 2007 – with all the players currently age-eligible for the USA’s Under-23 Women’s National Team. Fifteen of the players have represented the USA in the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup, 10 of them at the 2024 edition in Colombia in which the USA finished third and five at the 2022 tournament which was held in Costa Rica.

The senior team has not played since embarking on a brief European tour where they tied England 0-0 and then beat the Netherlands 2-1 to cap off a year that saw them win the Gold medal at the Paris Olympics.
