A new pathway to dream as MLS NEXT plans addition of another competition tier

January 13 – Four years ago, Major League Soccer (MLS) introduced MLS NEXT as a future pathway for youth soccer players in the United States. Beginning in September 2025, the programme is set to introduce a new competition tier with the aim to deepen its pool of talented players and coaches, while offering enhanced opportunities for growth and development.

Over 16,000 players, and 151 member clubs currently call MLS NEXT their home. With the new tier, it is planned that additional pathways will emerge for players and coaches by incorporating regular season games, regional tournaments, national events, and comprehensive coaching education programs.

MLS claims that this move reflects their seriousness in developing talent from the grassroots level to the professional stage.

General Manager of MLS NEXT, Kyle Albrecht, who just recently joined the platform said: “MLS NEXT is elevating soccer across North America for players, coaches, and referees. This expansion, alongside our strategic alliance with the Girls Academy, brings together top-tier resources to continue building a clear pathway for more players to reach their highest potential.”

As has been noted before, youth soccer in the United States is an expensive proposition as traveling large distances and dealing with accommodation is often a factor. MLS NEXT plans to give teams the opportunity to compete in one of eight regional tournaments each season.

These tournaments will act as a national qualifier of sorts giving clubs the chance to compete for MLS NEXT Cup Championship in 2026. In an interesting move, players, will be allowed to compete for their high schools.

As well as the much-anticipated MLS NEXT Cup, other events including the MLS NEXT Fest in December will act as key talent identification showcases, drawing scouts from colleges, professional teams, and national programs.

Luis Robles, MLS NEXT Technical Director said: “The addition of a new tier to MLS NEXT reflects Major League Soccer’s continued dedication to growing the game at the youth level. We are excited to deepen the talent pool and welcome more players and coaches.”

New partner, Cobalt Sports who run leagues, have said that they will adhere to the high technical standards set by MLS NEXT, ensuring a consistent and professional environment across all levels of play.

CEO of Cobalt, Brent Erwin said: “The opportunity for more players to join the Major League Soccer pyramid is important and exciting. Cobalt Sports is proud to be a part of this new MLS NEXT competition.”

Clubs throughout the United States and Canada that are interested in joining the new tier can apply now.
